Cataract is the biggest cause of blindness in India, and a simple operation can cure it – but for a poor family in a small town, even a check-up can be out of reach. Sadh Samaj Charitable Trust holds free eye camps where anyone can have their eyes examined by a specialist, get medicines and spectacles, and – if they need it – a cataract operation paid for by the trust.

What happens at a camp
- Registration: volunteers note each patient’s name, age and problem. There is no fee.
- Eye check-up: an eye specialist and his team examine every patient.
- Medicines and spectacles: patients get free eye drops and medicines, and spectacles where needed.
- Cataract surgery: patients who need an operation are given a date. The operation is done free at a partner eye hospital, and the trust pays.

Eye camp in Farrukhabad – 20 April 2023
Three years before the clinic opened, the trust held a free eye camp at the Sadh Samaj chowki in Farrukhabad. 424 patients were examined, about 150 were given spectacles, medicines were handed out free on the spot, and 170 patients were chosen for free cataract surgery. The managing committee fixed Rs 10,000 as the cost of each operation, and members came forward to pay for them – some for 10 or 20 operations each. Every patient and family was served a langar lunch.
Earlier camps
Health and eye care has been part of the trust’s work since its early years in Delhi: charitable clinics in Lajpat Nagar and West Azad Nagar, and free health camps with Medanta, Indian Spinal Injury Centre and Moolchand hospitals – one of them, at Gurudwara Krishna Market, Lajpat Nagar, saw more than 675 patients in a day. See the health camp photos. At a camp in Okhla in December 2021, 254 patients were checked and 239 pairs of spectacles given free – each pair costs the trust about Rs 100.
Sponsor a cataract operation – Rs 10,000
One operation costs the trust about Rs 10,000. Members of the trust have sponsored operations in blocks of three to eleven at a time. You can sponsor one – and give someone their sight back.
